How to plan a war? What is Realm of Empires really about!

So you wanna go to war eh!? Of course you do! It’s a game of conquest and war, not sim-village. So what do you do? Gather your forces and attack a nearest neighbor? If it is inactive, or clan-less, then sure but it is not much fun when there is no challenge, is there?

What you really want to do, is bungee jump off that bridge, skydive, ride the scariest rollercoaster, jump over the highest ski hill– you want the adrenaline rush!

What is the fun attempting something you know you cannot loose?

When playing poker with play money, don’t you usually choose some prize anyway– ‘we’re playing for honor, bragging rights, or a plaque on the wall’.

The real rush is when you gamble something you don’t want to lose. You have to fear the loss or there really is no fun, no excitement.

If realm of empires allowed you to create a village in 1 day, losing it wouldn’t matter much would it? You just start over again. But, if it takes you a MONTH to build one up, and perhaps 3-6 months to create a little empire of 10 villages, then it will hurt to lose them!! This is partly why Realm Of Empires is designed as it is – so that you can be proud of your accomplishments.

OK, so we agree we want the rush, yes? (if not then just pretend for a moment and we'll address that and the end :)

So, don’t pick on a clan a tenth of your size! Pick on someone you can actually loose against. Pick someone that will give you a challenge!

“Ok, ok, I found such a clan, so I launch my attacks now right?” Nooooo…! In a game of strategy, just attacking will surely get you eliminated. Now you need to plan!

And I mean plan! Plan 2-4 weeks ahead! Maybe more.

Contact your friends … *quietly*!
Can you trust all your clan mates? Maybe you should not let everyone in on your plans just yet! Talk to your friends and those in the clan you trust, perhaps the leadership – suggest your plan to them, sell them your idea. Convince your friends to join you, convince your clan leadership. This is not easy but remember, you are talking to REAL people. Learn to convince them in the game, and then perhaps you can convince your friends or boss real life of something that matters! Not a bad lesson to learn I think! :)

Ok, so you convinced your friends & clan to join you. Now it’s time to study the maps ( roe power tools will come in handy). Who are your targets? Should you target the leaders of the clan or everyone? List your targets; assign them to you battle group. Make sure all targets are covered.

What are your attack capabilities?
Do a clan roundup, find out what your clan members have – how many maxed out attack armies do they have? Do all such armies have rams & treb? Add up your armies to see how many targets you can take.

What about your target’s allies?
Who are they allied with? What do you know about the strength of these alliances? Will their allies come to their aid? Will they counter attack? How will you justify your aggression in front of others? Will other clans take advantage and attack you when you are week? THINK this through or you will perish, I guarantee it!

What about your allies?
How to take advantage of those relationships? Will all your allies attack with you? Probably not! And also, probably better not to let everyone in on your plans. But even if they will not fight with you, why not contact them a week ahead and ask for support? ‘Guys, we think something is brewing, cannot say yet in detail but please send us support, just in case. Thanks!’. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. Do not go to war with only your troops at your disposal. Get your allies to support you BEFORE d-day.

Also, will everyone in your clan attack? Most likely no. Most likely a good portion of your clan is too weak or new to participate – but why not use them? Get your smaller members to support you with ALL their Infantry and Spies. It is very unlikely they will be targeting in a counter attack but their troops will help you!

OK, so you are now ready to attack!
Do you have a plan for wave 2? Ie, what will happen after your first attack, after you guys spend all your attack armies? Why not involve allies to take a second attack wave? Make a plan for them, have a list of target, offer them your spy reports so that they can move in a day or two rather than in a week.

How will you hold villages you just took over?
Can you take 5 new villages and defend them all? If you cannot count on allies to support them and don’t have enough forces, perhaps better not bit more than you can chew. Perhaps just take what you can defend and destroy other villages to the ground with Trebuchet.

And many, many more questions should be asked. THIS IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS in Realm Of Empires. Plan well and you will be victorious and I guarantee an adrenalin rush on d-day! J
This is why Realm of Empires appears to be ‘slow’. It is precisely because it takes weeks to plan a successful war!

But I don’t wanna do all that! I don’t have the time or desire. Can’t I just grow my village and then slowly expand my empire?” Of course you can! But you still have to be aware of this. Realize that others in your clan may want to plan such wars so make sure you help them accomplish their goal by being active on the forums, being aware of what is going on, responding to their requests for information, sharing your spy information etc. Help them when asked for support, pick targets when asked etc. Your success is tied to theirs. I personally was part of both - the leading and planning of wars, as well as following a lead and found both very interesting and exciting.

PS. Some will disagree, some may laugh about I really believe Realm of Empires is educational, and can be a positive part of your life. Rather than taking risks like bungi jumping, we can partly satisfy this silly desire in a safe environment of a virtual medieval world. I think our real world will be a better place where we can expand some of our aggression and need to dominate in a safe environment such as this. We can be better, more successful in life if we can learn consequences of our poor communication, poor planning and apply those lessons to the real life. In realm of empires you are not dealing with a computer controlled AI, an algorithm you can sooner or later figure out. At Realm of Empires you go against your biggest adversary – the homo sapiens! (extraterrestrial and poltergeist excluded ;) )

I think most of us that play get this - but for those that didn't have a clue - you make it easy for them to understand how to play - and the reason for playing.

sadly enough, too much politics and alliances going around at the moment to have a truly engaging war game.

If eveyone can bulid/rebuild fast, their will be more wars.

Just because most people want to grow to a "comfortable size" or keep the hard built villages...so, diplomat rules. ^_^

In other game, you won't lose your towns, but $ and materials....so, easier to fight back and the war keep going on and on....

For ROE, I think a quick realm is perfect for some chaos~~!

The longer for players to build the less people want to engage at war.

Just my feeling after I played both realms and other online games.

I disagree about to much diplomacy. That is what war is about intrigue, getting the upper hand, lulling your enemies into a false sense of security and hitting them when they are weakened by to much fighting. Also what could be better then some solid allies. Read up about julius caesar. Politics, intrigue and warfare are all intertwined. Read Sun Tzu - he believed the best battle is won without fighting. In this realm there will always be warfare but you don't always need to be fighting it. I am excited to see where this leads us all!!!

Im raising my empire till i cant raise no more then ill take over a village so right now im defending my village

Doogal said...

This was well done.

But, as others have already said, there are too many players (in R1 at least) who are scared to lose what they have. Unfortunately, these are also the players that have the most villages, and have been playing the longest.

This means the rest of us either have to play sim-village, or leave our clans, and create a new one just for a bit of action.

Bring on the speed and tournament realms!!!!!!!!

And quickly lol.

No offense but the spelling in that is like a 12 year old..."loose" is suppose to be "lose" and "week" is suppose to be "weak". If you are loose then you hang out, or you tuck it back in, and a week is 7 days.

Ok i agrree with this i like to take villes and war if i lose out all together i don't cry bout it :) i come back and win! i have played a lot of war games and in all i end up atleast top ten easy...but rank does not matter to me it is the team work that is used...I am in the military and i see where team work will always prevail even against the odds of numbers and so called better fighters! we have won at any and all cost some of my friends play war games and agree they help you think more and helps you prevail when you plan and communication is the key so help out your clan when you get the chance :):)

This "How to Plan For War" posting is not particulalry helpful. It could be helpful by suggesting a scenario for waging war.

For example, guide us through a hypothetical battle strategy, plan of attack, and completion of a fight between two villages.

Showing newbies how it's done helps them (us) to do it!

The castle photos are cool... (they are more formidable in real life).

A quick note on grammer correction.

While I also appreciate it when posters use full sentences, proper grammer and spelling, am I only one that got a laugh from the person from the grammer police that called the other poster a nerd?

Hey, champ, you are posting on a thread about playing a game about building pretend midevil castles. We're ALL nerds here. ;-)

Well, I've started a clan whose goal is to have fun, and enslave nations!

We are benevolent aggressors in a world of sheep! We struggle valiantly to sow discord amongst the placid enemy clans to allow for a right-and-proper conflict!

Join clan [FG] now if you wish to pick a fight! Message Pelagius if you intend to expand voraciously... if you have a passion for plunder... if you wish to bring havoc to weak, timid clans!

Lets have fun. Join [FG]! We are just getting started, get on the bottom floor!

Message Player Pelagius, Realm 3 for info!

Correcting someone's spelling is not the same as accusing them of being stupid. However, when a developer gets his spelling and grammar wrong, it does look unprofessional. (especially with all the spell-checkers available out there) I'll bet he's not so careless with his coding, he know's it has consequences if he doesn't say what he means! We all let him know when his game has a bug in it, it's much the same.

btw - I appreciated the Original Post, thanks.

I found the original post to be interesting and informative. I would agree that it would have been nice for there to be more actual information about HOW to go to war. I am a newbie at this and want to understand the game. others like myself are not necessarily gamers, at least not on the computer and so it was very nice that someone took the time to teach us how to play. At least a bit of stradegy... Thank you!

I thought it was very very very easy making attack armies. I have 42 vills and barely play, but I plan well enough. 1000 knights 2000 inf 1000 lc 3000 peasants etc...alot more...

im starting to grow my villages. Im tired of waiting but still i waits, patience for success. I seen this world is not too really at WAR. My ambition is to build an empire and destroy all villages, all clans everything!!!.. NO allience, NO NAP, NO friends to trust, ONLY ENEMY to be destroy!
Just like in a movie, A DARK force of army will RISE and everyone will facing their DEATH.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At last count there were in excess of 17,000 players in realm 4 if not way more... I don't know if that includes all abandoned villages or not, but even if its just 1/6 of that (3000) you are talking a long long long damnably long game to go and kill all by yourself...

in short, it was deliberately set up to require cooperation in annihilation... How long that cooperation lasts after who knows...

Have at varlet!

Anonymous said...

Not well said... the them is right though. However, you have to remember.. in some cases it can take a week to build up enough forces to just try to stand up... a month to build up enough forces to wipe a major village.

Its not cut and dry like one may think. Try to take out a 8000 point village without spying it first when you are at 8000 yourself and see. (especially if you have never battled yet)

Great learning exercise when you fail. Sim-building is fine, but its also a great way to lose a lot of villages in a hurry. Overpopulated areas are where either boredom or chaos sets in.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the guide!
It is very helpful.
Coz i'm impatient and about to leave the game.
You made it more interesting for my views.
Keep up the good work guys and gals!

Z WILL REIGN SUPREME!!!

Anonymous said...

Z will reign huh. This is a joke of a statement. Clans like Z, M.O.R.E. and TA in R3 are pathetic. They chose to play by 1 vs 1 rules. Which in itself is okay, it is when a High king or Emporer attacks a Knight or a Barron. What is the excitement in that. When these people grow a back bone and decided to take on some one of the same size or bigger then they can brag about being something!

Hirose Kohinata-san said...

But risk is what life is made of right? Just make yourself a reasonable risk-taker though. Learn from your mistakes. Never learn how to give up especially on a war.

But what if you don't have a choice but to take risk? There are some special cases such as zis'. You have to attack the village without even spying it first. Even diplomacy has some unavoidable risks also.

In playing ROE, you will need this motto to be stuck in your mind.

"Its not that you can't do it, Its just that you think you can't do it!"

It really helps me a lot! Fear is an ancient vocabulary of our clan. Haha!

i think politics is a great thing in a strategy game such as this. it keeps a strong foundation beneath your feet. but it is when there is too much diplomatic situations and politics which will distract you from other main issues and importances that should be focussed on instead. with other important situations unattended to and set asside, you throw off the balance of the way things are to settle, and so the strong foundation begins to crack, and detiriorate, and that is when you will fall.

First of all, in order for a few helpful things to be accessed, you have to pay a total of less than $10 US. That's not bad. In fact, the package deal is only five dollars, plus the extra few dollars it takes to gain an extra large map on top of that.

Second, I have a small amount of programming knowledge. You apparently have absolutely none. If you did, you would understand that this game took, not minutes, not hours, not even days to create. More than likely a game like this, that is so very different in scope and gameplay from the majority of apps on Facebook, must have taken close to a year to program. This does not count the time it had to have taken to develop the structure, the general and specific aspects of the game that make it more than a one-click, send a gift, no real interaction game as you see so commonly in apps. It also does not include the time to play test the game. Or any of about a hundred other steps it takes to create a game of this scope.

And that would have been with a decent sized team of developers, just one or two, even up to five people would have likely taken much longer.

This is time taken away from friends, family, relationships, etc. They could have simply spent their time griping about functions in games that, while they make the game a little bit easier, are not necessary to running a village, group of villages, or clan effectively.

Oh, and mind you, the developers of this game actually spend time in the forums, and elsewhere. They actually remember people's names, even beginning player's names.

You could really do well to learn at least the basics of a subject before you open your mouth, because more than likely you will have to deal with hot-tempered, little red-heads like myself pointing out the fact that you are completely clueless.

By the way, If you want to find me in the forums so we can discuss your lack of knowledge further... Look for Sandra Hallett. Come on. You know you want to.

Anonymous said...

i would just like to say I completely enjoyed the subject. I would ask the grammar police if they had considered the possibility that english might not be the native language of the composer? the author of this piece obviously has a working knowledge of more than one language. Do you?

I'm pretty sure there are aliens in MY clan...

I have to agree that I find many ppl, programmers and players alike could stand to improve their spelling and grammar, however, it is a game, not a job and no ones perfect so I choose to ignore most of it.

I love "claim you gift" though...

While in war with other clans, does size of another player matter as long as your at war? Now! Let's be fair about this shall we. The player with a large amount of troops: Example: One player has 10,000 and another player has maybe a few hundred. Why would I want to challenge a few hundred when I can challenge some one that has a few thousand or equal in size? War is like playing king of the hill, whereby a top clan is trying to stay on top, while others are trying to reach the top. It's very educational and a good strategy game, along with team work just might get us to the top. Remembering an old saying: The bigger they are, the harder they fall. Sometimes it's better to take the time in building then to just jumping right into a war that can't be won.

Unknown said...

Yeah in other war games they do not lose villages but only money but what we are playing now is exactly a reality of medieval period. This is so fun and enjoyable. Playing this is like living in the past as rulers of villages and kingdoms and so on empires. Unlike other war games that only needed great forces to succeed this one need intellectual capabilities and personal values in dealing with other people. I think there is no other game of medieval years that will be more interesting than this one. . . ^_^

In this game i have found that knights are the ultimate weopon. nothing can stand up to the power of knights. an army of 2-3 thousand knights cannot be stopped. the use of knight warfare is the only real option for a full scale war. infantry are the best for defense but lc an cv are completely obselete

Some really good points on planning and having things lined up.

There are what I would personally regard as several flaws, but its a good over view of things to consider.

Sun Tzu is always good for high level concepts.

Anonymous said...

Whats up roe the reason for playing is to enjoy and fun then just get to know your clan well but heck it's hard to get a foot hold begginners need clan protection.

Anonymous said...

Whilst the idea is good, there is a problem, in all the games i have played like this, the big players Always attack smaller players, rarely players their own size, maybe this is because they have spent money getting so big and have the most to lose. So whilst the theory may be sound the practical part is flawed, mainly because of the way the game is designed
